What are Victorian Shutters?
Victorian shutters are solid panel shutters that mimic the style of shutters used in the Victorian era. Original Victorian shutters were often made from pine with brass hardware (hinges and furniture). Quite often the shutters were installed at the time the property was built and this enabled the Victorians to create some clever ways to hide the shutters when not in use. If you’re lucky enough, you may find your original shutters have ‘reveal boxes’ where the shutters fold and store away to.
Victorian shutter panels are often described in terms of the number of panels on each door. The most common is a 3 panel shutter door. In homes with smaller windows Victorian shutters with 2 panels were also popular.
Some people think that all Victorian houses had shutters, but that is not the case. They were a luxury that only certain people could afford and tended to be installed in the larger houses of the day for the same reason. Early glazing was fragile and thin and it also had poor insulating properties, as a result solid shutters were borne out of necessity. Quite simply, the shutters provided improved insulation; both in retaining heat and blocking out unwanted noise, they were also a deterrent to intruders.
Are Victorian Shutters Still Available?
Victorian shutters are still available but not in their original format. The shutters today are called solid panel shutters and are often made from Basswood and not pine. Due to the weight of pine, its softness and its inconsistent quality, Basswood is now the preferred timber for the construction. They look very similar to the original shutters and in some case can be a replacement for original pine shutters. New solid panel shutters made from Basswood or Larch can be cost effective when compared with making them with recycled pine to look original. We can even use mouldings to match the window details and they can have any number of panels to match the glazing configuration.
