What is Larchwood?

Larchwood is quickly increasing in popularity and is an excellent choice of wood for shutters and blinds.

Larchwood is a conifer that is deciduous and loses its leaves in autumn. The leaves are needle like approximately 4cm long and under 1mm wide, green in colour which turns to yellow in the autumn before falling off with the tree having no leaves during the winter. It’s a fast growing timber making it sustainable timber crop.

Larches are from the genus Larix and originate from the cooler climates of Canada and Russia. Larchwood has many great qualities not least its toughness and durability, it’s also knot free and has a high resistance to rot and water. This inherent resistance to rot and water makes wood products made from Larch ideal for exterior use. The Larch wood we use for our interior shutters is Siberian Larch.

The wood from Larches is in demand for yacht and boat building due to its water resistance but larches are also used in Bonsai cultivation. The Larch is often referred to as “The Tree of Eternity” due to its strong, durable and versatile nature. The grain is prominent and has a golden colour making it an excellent choice for interior shutters that will be finished with a stain.  This wood is perfect for those looking for window shutters with natural beauty and long life performance.

Larch Plantation Shutters

Wooden plantation shutters often use long, thin pieces of wood to make up the louvres and stiles and this can make them susceptible to warping and twisting. Larchwood has a natural resistance to warping with a long, straight grain and this makes it ideal for manufacturing shutters where warping could potentially be an issue.

Signature Shade Larchwood Shutters

Signature Shade larchwood shutters are manufactured to the highest possible standards and come from managed, sustainable sources. As part of our commitment to producing shutters to the highest possible standard, we employ a technique called Prescription Wood Conditioning®.  Part of this process includes drying the wood to match the humidity and moisture conditions of the location where the shutters are to be installed. This helps to reduce post-installation swelling and shrinking as the wood adjusts to its new home. As with all our shutter products, we use the stronger mortise and tenon joints rather than the inferior, weaker dowelled joints that some of our competitors use.  All this means we are able to provide a full 3 year warranty on our window shutters giving you peace of mind when making any purchase.

Larchwood Shutter Colours & Finish

All our shutters are hand finished like a quality piece of furniture.  They are treated with 6 coats of paint or stain of your choice resulting in a smooth, luxurious finish that will last for years to come. The final, top coat has a UV inhibitor to prevent fading or discolouration. If you prefer something different, we also offer to paint the shutters in a custom colour of your choosing. Our standard colour palette includes 11 paint and 15 wood-stain finishes and we can customise in any colour from the Farrow & Ball or Dulux trade palettes.

Larchwood Shutter Louvres

Is it louvre or louver?

‘Louvre’ is British English and ‘Louver’ is American English.  With the origins of plantation shutters in the Americas, some people use the American version ‘louver’.

The louvres are quarter sawn which creates a louvre that is more dimensionally stable resisting warping, cupping and twisting. This process also enhances the look of the grain which in turn gives greater elegance and beauty to the shutters. Included in the louvre option is a solid panel (no louvres) shutter.
