What are Full Height Shutters?
Plantation Shutters, or simply window shutters, come in a variety of different styles, materials and finishes. The breadth of options available can making selecting the right shutter difficult, but in attempting to make your decision more straightforward, we will review the styles of shutters that are available to you. There are 6 main design styles of interior window shutter with the main one being a full height shutter.
A full height shutter is a shutter that covers the full height of the window in once piece. In the majority of cases, there would be a number of full height shutter panels all hinged together to span the width of the window. The most popular configuration for full height shutters is two panels hinged together and bi-folding to the left and two further panels hinged together and bi-folding to the right – this is a 4 shutter panel configuration (Left, Left, Right, Right).
Whether it’s 2, 4 or 6 full height shutter panels, it is usual to have half of the panels opening and folding to the left and the other half opening and folding to the right. In doing so, they can be ‘drawn back’ like curtains exposing the entire window and allowing maximum light into the room.
If full height is your design preference, you should consider whether there is space on either side of the window to accommodate the panels when folded back. Window shutters are typically fitted up against the window frame allowing the shutter panels to fold against the window reveal when opened. The depth of the window reveal and the width of the shutter panel will determine if the shutters protrude into the room space when folded back.

Full height shutters remain the most popular shutter style; they are easy to use, have clean, contemporary lines with an uncluttered look and allow light to flood into your room when fully opened. They look fabulous on both short and tall windows and can be used with great effect at patio and french doors. For information on patio door shutters or french door shutters click the links.
Full Height Shutters with Divider or Mid-Rail
Dividers or mid-rails are very commonly used on full height shutter panels. Their purpose is two-fold: they are used to match the horizontal mullions found in windows ensuring from an architectural perspective, there is symmetry between the windows and the shutters, they also provide added strength to the shutter panels acting as a brace and prevent tall panels from twisting or warping.
Full height shutters for windows or openings over 1800mm tall must have a divider rail fitted into the panel. At Signature Shade we give you a full 3 years peace of mind warranty on all our full height shutters.
