What is Cedar Wood?

Cedar comes from many different trees grown all over the world. The Cedar that is used for our shutters is Western Red Cedar.

Western Red Cedar is native to North America, Canada and Alaska but can also be found in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Cedar is a large, coniferous tree that grows to around 200ft tall (60metres) with a 10ft diameter trunk. They are long-living with many individual trees living well past 1000 years old. The Cedar foliage is aromatic with leaves like scales that fan out to form flat sprays.

The timber from Cedar is reddish-brown in colour and has a tight straight grain with very few knots. It also has a high natural resistance to decay, insects, moths and other wood pests which makes it an ideal wood for products exposed to the elements. Its aroma is known for discouraging moths hence moth balls made from cedar, cedar clothes hangers and Cedarwood bedding trunks. Its tight, straight grain and its resistance to rot make it the perfect wood for interior shutters and exterior shutters.

Cedar Plantation Shutters

Wooden plantation shutters often use long, thin pieces of wood to make up the louvres and stiles and this can make them susceptible to warping and twisting. Western Red Cedar has a natural resistance to warping with a long, straight grain and this makes it ideal for manufacturing shutters where warping could potentially be an issue.

Our Western Red Cedar Shutters

Our Cedar shutters are made from the finest Western Red Cedar to produce a shutter that is second to none. The warm, reddish-brown colour and fine, even grain makes it ideal as a stained or oiled shutter, showing the true beauty of the timber. In terms of construction, our shutters are made from cross cut timber that is engineered for extra stability and strength. Assembly is by means of the stronger mortice and tenon joints rather than the weaker dowelled joints used in the shutters of some of our competitors. All the care and attention to detail that we lavish on our shutters enables us to offer you a peace of mind 3 year warranty on all our Cedarwood Shutters.

Red Cedar Shutters Stained, Painted or Oiled?

All our shutters are hand finished to a furniture grade standard. The Cedar shutter comes with a choice of natural finishes to show the true beauty of the wood and its fine grain. We offer you a choice of 2 natural finishes: light-medium and medium-dark, either oiled or lacquered. You also have a choice of 17 painted finishes or are able to customise in a colour of your liking. Once the shutters are hand finished your choice of colour or stain is applied in 6 coats to produce a silky, smooth, lustrous finish. The final coat of colour or stain has a UV inhibitor to prevent fading. Oiled cedar shutters will need to be oiled again to maintain their lustre.
