Shutter louvres are the moveable slats that most people associate with Plantation Shutters. Although they have a functional role in controlling the light and air that passes through the shutters they also have an aesthetic appeal.

Large 89mm Louvred Shutters
I often get asked “What size louvre should I have?” In this case I would say they need to be in proportion to the size of the window. Large window = large louvers and small window = small louvres. It’s a simple rule and it does work for most situations but what about art style, decoration and the visual impact of your shutters?
When Plantation shutters first became popular in the UK most people opted for what they had seen on their travels. This was normally the smaller louvred shutters found in Europe, France, Italy and Spain for example but as the years have moved on the louvre sizes have increased in size.
Only 7 – 10 years ago the 47mm louvred shutters were popular then around 5 years ago the 64mm louvre was the rage. Now in 2011 the 89mm louvre is becoming more popular. Many customers now choose the larger louvres as seen in the American sunshine states like California to allow more light in and enjoy bright living spaces.
So what size of louvre do you want?
