    White Window Shutters

When is comes to window shutters the most popular colour is white but why?

    White Window Shutters

    White Window Shutters

White Window shutters are a great way of shading your windows and they are fast becoming the no 1 most desirable window dressing available today. But why are they all white?

To answer that we need to know a little bit of shutter history. First off I must state we are talking about louvred shutters or to use the real term Plantation Shutters rather than the traditional Georgian solid panel shutters.

Plantation Shutters as their name suggests originate from the sugar and cotton plantations of southern states of America. The climate there is hot and humid and homes in the area had shutters to allow the light in, air ventilation for cooling and slats or louvres for privacy. They were painted white to direct the sunlight into the room but also to reflect infra red rays (the heat) from the sun outward away from the windows.

Although louvred shutters of various colours had been used widely around America it was the distinctive white shutters of the Plantations that stood out and copies started to appear elsewhere. Today most people use the term Plantation Shutter for any louvred shutter but strictly speaking they should be white louvred shutters in order to be called Plantation Shutters.

    Large or Small Shutter Louvres?

Shutter louvres are the moveable slats that most people associate with Plantation Shutters. Although they have a functional role in controlling the light and air that passes through the shutters they also have an aesthetic appeal.

    Large Louvred Shutters

    Large 89mm Louvred Shutters

I often get asked “What size louvre should I have?” In this case I would say they need to be in proportion to the size of the window. Large window = large louvers and small window = small louvres. It’s a simple rule and it does work for most situations but what about art style, decoration and the visual impact of your shutters?

When Plantation shutters first became popular in the UK most people opted for what they had seen on their travels. This was normally the smaller louvred shutters found in Europe, France, Italy and Spain for example but as the years have moved on the louvre sizes have increased in size.

Only 7 – 10 years ago the 47mm louvred shutters were popular then around 5 years ago the 64mm louvre was the rage. Now in 2011 the 89mm louvre is becoming more popular. Many customers now choose the larger louvres as seen in the American sunshine states like California to allow more light in and enjoy bright living spaces.

So what size of louvre do you want?

    Plantation Shutter Trends

    Shutter Trends.

Plantation shutters have been popular in the UK for at least 12 years now and it looks like the trend will continue for quite some time.

    Tier on Tier Shutters

Plantation shutters are the white slatted shutters that look like Venetian blinds with wide slats. Shutters come in many styles and colours but Plantation shutters are defined as white shutters from their colonial past.

A recent survey has shown that luxury product sales like shutters are still growing above the national average (As of July 2011). Many people still desire to have quality products in their homes despite the higher costs involved, they often state that in the long term it makes more economic sense. You buy once, your shutters will last a lifetime and actually put value on the home.

    Why Plantation Shutters?

    Why Plantation Shutters?

Window shutters or to use the correct term Plantation Shutters are unique in their ability to offer shade, light and privacy at the same time hence the popularity of shutters. Shutters are, in their simplest form a framed panel with movable louvre’s or slats fitted in the frame. They look similar to Venetian Blinds but are far more substantial lasting decades.

Louvred Shutters come in many styles, colours and materials with varying added features like hidden control rods and motorised louvre’s (slats) so there is something to suit every window.
